Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi delivered a pointed jab at President Trump's Gaza relocation proposals on Tuesday, suggesting in a Sky News interview that "sending Israelis to Greenland would kill two birds with one stone" – a barbed reference to Trump's unsuccessful 2019 attempt to purchase the Danish territory.
The comments came as Trump continues to promote his controversial plan to relocate Gaza residents to neighboring Arab countries. In an overnight press briefing, Trump described Gaza as "hell for years" and suggested evacuating residents to "safer, better, maybe more comfortable areas."
"Previous attempts to force Palestinians to migrate from Gaza have all failed," Araghchi told Sky News. "Palestinians cannot be expelled. They must determine their own lands and destiny."
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump elaborated on his plan: "We're talking about moving one and a half million people and simply cleaning up this whole place. I don't know, something has to happen, but it's really just a disaster zone right now."
Trump expressed confidence that Egyptian President El-Sisi and Jordan's King Abdullah would accept Palestinian refugees, though Jordan has already rejected the proposal. "I hope El-Sisi will take some Palestinians from Gaza. We've helped them a lot, and I'm sure he'll help us. He's my friend," Trump said.
NBC News reported last week that Trump's policy team is exploring a plan to temporarily relocate approximately 2 million Gaza residents to Indonesia. When asked about a possible meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump responded that it would happen "in the not-too-distant future."
