Sheikh Raed Salah, the head of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement, which was declared a terrorist organization and a sister movement of Hamas, was arrested today (Tuesday), according to an Arab report, during a police raid in Umm al-Fahm. At the same time, police raided the offices of the "Committees for the Dissemination of Peace" under his direction and confiscated many materials.
Salah, who led the split in the Islamic Movement in the 1990s, has been convicted several times over the years of incitement to counterterrorism and responsibility for Arab riots. Among other things, he was sentenced to 28 months in prison in 2020 for incitement to terrorism, and was released in December 2021.
In 2003, Salah was arrested along with other leaders of the northern branch on suspicion of transferring funds to Hamas and contacts with a foreign agent. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Coalition of Charity, an umbrella organization that coordinates the transfer of donations to the Hamas movement. In recent years, he has been subject to various travel restrictions, including a ban on leaving the country, due to intelligence information about his intentions to act against national security.
According to Arab media, during today's raid, the activities of the committees headed by Salah were banned, and many materials were confiscated. The police have not yet provided further details about his arrest and the circumstances of his arrest.
