"I take responsibility for failure, and i take responsibility for the achievements. No one hid information or helped the enemy on October 7th", Herzi Halevi said in his announcement following news of him resigning at the beginning of May due to failure to prevent the October 7th attack.
Hours after announcing his resignation from his position following the October 7th failure, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi delivered a statement to the public. Earlier today, Halevi informed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant that he has decided to end his term on March 6, 2025.
According to Halevi: "No one hid information, and no one assisted the enemy. We failed to protect the citizens on Simchat Torah 5784, and I will bear the consequences for the rest of my life. I can say right now that no one knew about the surprise attack. And no one hid information."
Regarding the investigation of the events of October 7, Halevi said: "An external inquiry committee will be able to investigate what happened."
In his resignation letter, Halevi wrote, among other things: "I informed the Minister of Defense today that in light of my acknowledgment of responsibility for the IDF's failure on October 7, and at a time when the IDF has achieved significant accomplishments and is in the process of implementing a hostage release agreement, I request to conclude my duties on March 6, 2025."
He added, "In the remaining time, I will complete the investigations and maintain the IDF's machines for security challenges. I will transfer command of the IDF in a quality and thorough manner to my successor. I have sent a letter to the Minister of Defense and the Prime Minister on the matter."
