Politicians from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Opposition Leader Yair Lapid responded today to IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi's decision today (Tuesday) to resign from the army following his failure to stop the October 7th attack.
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid said that he saluted Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, and that now "the Prime Minister and his disaster government" should all take responsibility and resign."
State Camp party leader Benny Gantz, himself a former Chief of Staff, posted on X that
"Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi is first and foremost a warrior, one of the best sons and commanders of this country. He fought for the country his entire adult life and dedicated his life to it.
"The Chief of Staff is militarily responsible for the October 7 disaster and is also responsible for the IDF's tremendous recovery. He took responsibility from the first moment, exercised it on the battlefield, and now also exercises his public responsibility in a manner worthy of appreciation. I ask to strengthen him in his moral and correct decision. In his actions, he implemented what every officer in the IDF learns - 'Watch from me, and do likewise.'
"Alongside continuing security efforts, returning the kidnapped and caring for evacuees, the Prime Minister and the political echelon must fulfill their responsibility to establish a state investigation committee and lead the State of Israel to elections so that a government can be established that will regain the public's trust."
President Isaac Herzog responded to the resignation by reiterating his call for a State Commission of Inquiry on the disaster which will lead to the learning of lessons, taking of responsibility, making conclusions, and building trust between the citizens and their state."
Lastly, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he spoke with Halevi shortly after his resignation announcement, thanking him for his long years of service and for commanding the IDF in the "war of restoration" on seven fronts, leading to great achievements for the State of Israel. He also said that the two agreed to meet in the coming days.
