Southern Command Commander Major General Yaron Finkelman has submitted a handwritten letter of resignation from his position and from the army today (Tuesday), citing his failure to stop the October 7 attack and massacre.
In this letter, Finkelman said that:
By force of my conscience and the values that guide me, I have decided to end my role as commander of Southern Command and my service in the IDF.
On October 7, I failed in protecting the western Negev and its beloved and heroic residents.
This failure will be burned in me for all of my life.
Out of responsibility for the State of Israel, the residents of the Perimeter who are beloved and very dear to me, the IDF and its people, I have acted since to lead the war on Hamas and the terror organizations in Gaza.
I was privileged to command in war over wonderful male and female commanders, wonderful male and female fighters - the victory generation.
Their fighting - were chapters of heroism and marvels in the history of the IDF and the state.
With deep pain, I will keep the fallen in my heart. The best of our sons and daughters, fierce in spirit, soul, and deed. By their legacy, we will march and I will always be with the bereaved families.
With me are also our wounded in their pain and their amazing struggle to heal and achieve health.
In this war we dealt a serious blow to the Hamas organization.
To you! You must continue to strike at the enemy, to return out hostages to their homes and the communities to their land in security and prosperity.
General Finkelman's resignation comes shortly after IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi's announcement that he will end his term and resign from the army at the end of March.
