Investigators from the Shalem station in the Jerusalem District conducted an investigation last week into suspected threats to commit a terrorist act by a resident of the Old City in his 20s.
The investigation of the case began with a report at the police hotline, in which the defendant's mother reported that her son intended to carry out an attack in the immediate period of time and did not know where he was.
Shalem station investigators began a variety of investigative activities, along with the deployment of police forces that worked to trace the accused. Within a short time, Shalem police station, together with Jerusalem Border Police soldiers, located the defendant in a souvenir shop near the Dung Gate in the Old City. The defendant was arrested by the police and transferred to the police station for interrogation.
As part of the investigation, it emerged that a few days earlier, the defendant had written a message to his sister in which he said, "I am going to carry out an attack," and added, "I have repented and I am with the sheikh all day, now I am at Al-Aqsa praying."
As part of his interrogation, his detention was extended from time to time in court at the request of police investigators. Today, at the end of an investigation and the establishment of an evidentiary basis against him, an indictment was filed by the Jerusalem District Police Prosecution Unit, along with a request to extend his detention until the end of the proceedings.
The police said: "Israel Police will continue to act with all the means at its disposal against any threat that endangers the security of the citizens of the State of Israel. We will continue to act as we did in this case, while locating the accused, exhausting his investigation, while formulating an evidentiary basis for his actions and filing an indictment by the prosecution authorities."
