Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar gave an account today (Monday) of the decisive government meeting in which it approved the hostage deal or "parameters" with Hamas over the weekend.
Sa'ar began by saying that there wasn't an Israeli "whose heart didn't overflow" at the sight of Romi, Doron, and Emily returning safely to Israel and being embraced by their loved ones.
Sa'ar said that the government meeting at which it approved the hostage deal was one of the most honest and "difficult" government meetings Sa'ar, who has served in a number of governments, could remember, saying that ministers spoke "with the blood of their hearts."
He also said that he understood those ministers who voted against the deal, saying that the arguments and fears they raised were serious, and that the hostage deal does indeed involve risks and dangers.
Sa'ar said that nevertheless, despite these dangers, he believes that the government approval of the deal was the right one, first and foremost based on the principle of social solidarity, which he called the foundation of the State of Israel.
Sa'ar then addressed the importance of his Knesset faction joining the Netanyahu government, saying that with the Otzmah Yehudit party leaving the government in opposition to the deal, his group was needed to ensure it passed. "Anyone who knows math" knows this, he said.
Sa'ar then took the time to hit back against the opposition parties who criticized him for breaking off from Benny Gantz's State Camp party to join Prime Minister Netanyahu's coalition, a move they called unprincipled and desperate in light of his party's dismal polling.
Sa'ar said that "this is the time for soul searching for all those who wildly attacked us over the responsibility and the wisdom in our moves: Who contributed more to securing the hostage parameters - the Opposition Leader with yelling - or us by doing?"
