Israel is ecstatic following the release of 3 Israeli hostages: Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher and Emily Damari today in a hostage/ceasefire deal with Hamas. While the hostages are to undergo thorough medical examinations following 471 days in harrowing conditions, viewers couldn't help but notice Emily's hand injury seen in the release videos appearing to be missing multiple fingers.
It was later confirmed with the family's approval that Emily Demari lost two fingers on the day of her abduction, October 7, when she was injured by gunfire from Hamas militants.
Message from the Families Headquarters for the Return of the Hostages First response from Mandi Damari, Emily's mother:
"After 471 days - Emily is finally home. We would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts everyone who tirelessly fought for Emily during this difficult period. To everyone who raised their voice and called her name, in Israel, England, the United States, and around the world – thank you. Thanks to you, Emily is back home. Emily's nightmare in Gaza is over, but there are still too many families who are still waiting in pain. We must act together for the release of all the hostages, until the last one. Those who are still in captivity need immediate humanitarian assistance. We ask the media to respect Emily's and our family's privacy at this time."
Spokesperson for the Families Headquarters for the Return of the Hostages.
The 3 hostages have gone through an initial medical examination and are being transported to Tel Hashomer hostpital for more extensive health checks. Photos and documentation show Emily has been reunited with part of her immediate family, including her mother, and her and the other two hostages reunited with their remaining family members once they finish being examined at the hospital.
