Against the backdrop of the ceasefire and the first phase of the release of the hostages, Dr. Michael Milstein, a senior researcher at the Dayan Center, explained how the Palestinians perceive the ceasefire and the end of the fighting at this time.
First, Milstein referred to the non-transfer of the list of the three hostages who are supposed to be released today. "It shows that Hamas mostly remains what it is. A factor that is constantly working to manipulate, to stretch the boundaries as much as possible. Here we have nothing to be surprised. Israel is also signaling that if the names are not transferred by 8:30 p.m., as far as we are concerned, we will not stop the fire as we hope in Gaza," Milstein said.
"We really see displays of joy and narratives of victory and everything. We have a tendency to really say, 'Yes, but they know the answer.' I say that if we have learned serious and profound things from October 7, it is that we do not understand this organization, and sometimes not all the Palestinians. For the most part, they really believe that there was a great victory here. Hamas continues to be the dominant factor in Gaza, there is no alternative against Hamas and no protest against Hamas. The fact that thousands of people were killed and Gaza was destroyed is the price," he explained.
He then referred to the conduct of the negotiations in the hostage deal and the Israeli lack of understanding. "I think we've had a really hard time understanding this issue over the past year and three months. We insisted that we have more force and we will bring about their flexibility, we will succeed in convincing them to raise a white flag and leave Gaza, and I repeat once again – we don't understand what Hamas is? As far as they are concerned, Hamas continues to the end, even suicide, so that they do not raise a white flag or make concessions," he claimed.
