Israel-Hamas hostage deal: Soroka Hospital prepares to receive and treat hostages

Soroka Hospital has made intensive preparations to receive the hostages to be released today, based on experience treating those released in earlier deals.

Soroka Hospital Spokesperson Sharon Edri announced today (Sunday) that they are preparing to receive and treat Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher and Emily Damari, who were held hostage for over a year by Hamas and who are being released today.

The hospital's preparations include establishing a designated area for those returning from captivity, including a full treatment track - from the helicopter launching pad to the trauma and shock room at the urgent care unit for initial stabilization and medical assessment, to the hospitalization department.

The spokesperson that that a dedicated and skilled multi-disciplinary staff, which has experience from treating hostages released in the previous exchange is ready to get to work to produce the best, most sensitive possible care.

The staff includes male and female medical staff, nurses, social workers, psychologists, psychotherapists, nutritionists, those involved in rehabilitation medicine, and other health fields.

Soroka Director, Professor Shlomi Kadosh said that "the experience we accumulated in treating the seven hostages which returned in the previous deal, including Alma Avraham who arrived in a very serious conditions and whose life we succeeded in saving, teaches us of the enormous importance of being fully ready for every scenario.

"Our teams are ready at the highest professional and emotional level to absorb those returning and to grant them the best of care, while accompanying and supporting their families."

"We at Soroka view the treatment of those returning to be a national mission of the first order and we all hope that those who return will come back in good condition and not need life-saving medical treatment, but if it is necessary - we are ready to provide them with the best."

The hostages are set to be released by Hamas after 4 PM Israel time (9 AM EST). The IDF, government authorities, and Soroka Hospital have made special preparations for their return to Israel.

The government has also released guidelines for the public on how to treat the hostages and speak about them in public and on social media.
