In the bustling rehabilitation wing of Sheba Medical Center, a former elite IDF Major is transforming how wounded soldiers face their new reality.
Sagi Dovev is not only a Krav Maga head trainer for the IDF's special forces with over 15 years of experience as an operations consultant, but he is also a former European champion in Jiu-jitsu and world-renowned martial arts expert.
And for the past 15 months, since the horrors of October 7th, Sagi Dovev has been working tirelessly with single, double and triple amputees, drawing on a unique philosophy forged through years of military leadership.
Yet his realism comes paired with unwavering hope. "These kids are young, they are resilient, and they still have their whole lives ahead of them. Plus what choice do they really have?"
He shows them videos of other amputees who've become inspirational speakers, living proof of overcoming extraordinarily difficult challenges.
His approach combines physical training with psychological reinforcement. "They need to test their new bodies," he explains. "They need to know their new limits. And then? Then they need to push past them."
Even after discharge, his former patients return regularly for outpatient therapy, testament to the trust he's built."We will rebuild," he tells them. "You can have an amazing life, you can do whatever you want to do - you can have an even better life than you had before. You can lead the country."
Sagi has turned a standard rehab facility into something between a boxing gym and a warrior's dojo. At 46, when he could be anywhere else, he spends most of the day, five days a week, helping wounded soldiers rediscover their strength - all without drawing a salary.
Sagi is a man on a mission, so busy he doesn't even have time to feel depressed even though he faces the grueling reality of the cost of war, day in and day out, seeing things that would shatter even the bravest hearts.
"I don't tell them anything I don’t believe," he says, adjusting training pads for his next session. "I believe in what I say 100%, and it translates - they believe it because I believe it."
This raw authenticity has become his trademark, earned through years of military leadership in a unit so elite it remains classified. Even so, the IDF has very specific qualities they look for when selecting elite soldiers and commanders: extraordinary physical and mental strength, courage and innate leadership, and Sagi has all of those qualities and more in spades.
When Hamas attacked on October 7th, Sagi rushed to Sheba, when he discovered that some of his former soldiers were among the wounded. And he hasn't left since, sustaining his mission through personal bank loans while recently beginning to explore public speaking to generate some extra income.
"When people ask me about post-trauma, I say: "What post-trauma? We are still in a war. We haven't even gotten to the stage of post-trauma yet.""
In his transformed training space, wounded warriors like Matan, Amitay and Roee– all double amputees at different stages of recovery - find not just physical rehabilitation but a restoration of their warrior spirit.
"Life is not easy for a double amputee," he acknowledges, pushing back against superficial positivity. "They might look smiley and super positive on social media, but they're obviously not always like that."
Sagi documents his journey on Instagram, where he has an impressive following, offering glimpses into a world where determination meets possibility. In this room, every punch thrown is a small act of defiance, every smile a victory. It's where wounded soldiers rediscover not just their physical capabilities but their identities as warriors.
For Sagi Dovev, it's a mission that transcends financial security or personal comfort - it's about ensuring that every wounded warrior has the chance to rebuild, recover, and realize their full potential in their changed but no less promising lives.
As Israel continues to grapple with the aftermath of October 7th, Sagi's story reflects a larger truth about the nation's response - how individual citizens have stepped forward, often at great personal sacrifice, to fill critical needs in their nation's time of crisis.
Sagi Dovev embodies the heart of Israel at its finest – unflinching honesty paired with deep compassion and an iron will to heal. Because of people like him, our wounded warriors aren't just surviving; they're finding their way back to lives filled with purpose, joy, and boundless possibility.
As the sun sets over Sheba Medical Center, the sounds of determination echo through the halls. Tomorrow, Sagi will be here again, without fanfare or recognition, doing the work that must be done. Because in this room, on these mats, Israel's wounded warriors aren't just recovering - they're redefining what's possible. And with mentors like Sagi Dovev, they're proving that the human spirit can triumph over any obstacle, one punch, one smile, one victory at a time.
