Lieutenant Yair Shoshan was killed in combat operations in southern Gaza today (Monday).
Shoshan had received a special commendation from Israel's Prime Minister and IDF Chief of Staff during his officer training graduation just last summer, local officials announced today.
The young officer, son of Michael and Hadas Shoshan, was raised in the northern Israeli city of Ma'alot-Tarshiha. City officials noted his dedication to military service, highlighting his recent recognition for excellence during his officer training course.
Ma'alot-Tarshiha Mayor Moti Ben David announced Shoshan's death in an official statement, praising the lieutenant's service record and his deep connection to the community where he grew up and was educated. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced separately, according to city officials.
Shoshan was an alumnus of the prestigious Bnei David Military Academy's 33rd class at their Eli preparatory program, which prepares religious students for military service.
As reported by Israeli journalist Amit Segal, Yair is the twenty-ninth casualty from the Bnei David Academy to be killed in service during the Israel-Gaza war.
Faculty and students from the academy expressed their condolences to the Shoshan family. The Bnei David Institutions, located in the settlement of Eli, is known as one of Israel's leading religious military preparatory programs, combining Torah study with preparation for IDF service.
May his memory be blessed and may his family be comforted together with the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
