Israel's consul in New York, Ofir Akunis, refers to reports of progress in the negotiations for the release of hostages and says he estimates that the deal will be signed as early as next week.

In an interview for the 'Maariv' podcast, Akunis said: "A deal might be signed by January 20, that's my estimate, it doesn't mean it will happen. For the sake of the hostages themselves, this is inhumane, and I understand the feelings of all the families of the hostages, they need to see their families. The observers, the elderly, the soldiers."

Additionally, Akunis mentioned the kidnapped soldier Idan Alexander: "One of them is actually my resident, yes, by definition, Idan Alexander, we saw him in the video, and I know his parents, Adi and Yael, and I have been to their home, I'm not sure if there has ever been an Israeli representative at the Alexander family's home in New Jersey."

Akunis shared: "Idan is a lone soldier who was kidnapped by monsters. By monsters, who are holding him, and I mean everyone, the observers, and also the adults, and the boys and girls."
