Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, at the head of a ministerial delegation, met with the new Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus to discuss a number of critical issues concerning both countries, reported Lebanese news sources.
Al-Arabiya reported that the two sides agreed to establish joint committees on several issues, especially the situation of the displaced Syrians in Lebanon, numbering about 1.5 million people.
Al-Sharaa reiterated what he had said several times recently: "Iran hit Syria, our home, and Hezbollah left us with great wounds. Syria will no longer be a conduit for Iranian weapons. Despite all this, we are fully prepared to cooperate with everyone in Lebanon, and we wish you nothing but the best, especially after the election of the Lebanese President."
The Syrians have expressed their willingness to cooperate with Lebanon and improve relations between the two countries, in contrast to previous approaches during the period of the previous Syrian regime.
