Dr. Mordechai Kedar, the renowned Middle East expert, spoke on Channel 14's "Israel Morning" program today (Thursday) about the presidential elections in Lebanon, which are taking place after two years in which the country was left without a president: "Today in Lebanon, Hezbollah is not even a consideration. Its political power, which he has accumulated over the years thanks to his weapons and actions, both in Syria and elsewhere, has simply evaporated."
The presidential race in Lebanon is taking place against the backdrop of the historic change taking place in the Middle East, in which Hezbollah – which was the greatest threat to Israel after Iran in the axis of evil – suffered a huge military blow from Israel, and the brutal regime of Bashar al-Assad, which for years was Hezbollah's oxygen and an integral part of the Iranian axis of evil, collapsed in just 11 days.
Kedar also referred to Hezbollah's efforts to promote the candidacy of Suleiman Frangieh, who is known as a "collaborator" of the terrorist organization, and stressed that "the Lebanese parliament will probably elect Joseph Aoun, a candidate who is not supported by Hezbollah – this is clear evidence of the organization's weakness in the political arena."
Kedar explained that Hezbollah's sense of defeat is also felt in the cognitive arena, but stressed: "Of course, this is factually incorrect. The weapons are still there, the missiles are still there, and the attacks continued until the ceasefire. But from a cognitive standpoint, these things permeate and weaken Hezbollah both within Lebanese society and in the Arab media."
