Traveling Abroad as an IDF Soldier: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Expert reveals: "Every soldier is a target" - What to do to avoid arrest abroad?

After the dramatic event in Brazil where an IDF soldier was arrested and managed to escape the country, Channel 12 viewers asked how one can avoid arrest abroad, how do terrorist organizations know about those who served in Gaza, and whether every flight is dangerous for anyone who served in the IDF.

After the dramatic incident in which an IDF soldier who was in Brazil was arrested and managed to escape, attorney Nitzana Darshan-Leitner, president of the "Shurat HaDin" organization, answered viewers' questions on Channel 12 regarding the precautions that soldiers should take when traveling abroad.

The first and significant question was: What to do to avoid arrest abroad?

"Do not upload photos from military activities to social media. If you have such photos on your accounts, delete them. Additionally, take the number of the Israeli consulate in your travel destination, and if, God forbid, you are arrested, do not speak during the interrogation and contact the consulate and a lawyer."

Another question was asked to Dr. Leitner: "How do these organizations know who served in Gaza?"

And she replied: "All the information that reaches the organizations comes from social networks, from the posts that the soldiers themselves upload. They also share their personal lives on social media and post where they are flying to. The anti-Israel organizations put two and two together."

The users on Channel 12 also asked: "Is flying dangerous for anyone who served in the IDF?"

"In the eyes of pro-Palestinian organizations, every soldier is a target. Of course, they need to prove why he should even be considered as someone who committed war crimes. Therefore, they will try to identify soldiers who operated in Gaza or the north and will focus less on soldiers about whom they have no information. But in general, their goal is to attack any soldier, regardless."

"The more anti-Israel the stance, the greater the danger. Belgium issued an arrest warrant against Ariel Sharon. South Africa took steps against Tzipi Livni, and even the UK issued arrest warrants against Doron Almog. One can tell from the past which countries possess the tool of prosecuting for war crimes," the lawyer replied.
