IRGC Commander Esmail Ghaani is visiting Baghdad today (Sunday) to meet with leaders of Iran-backed militias in Iraq as well as the Iraqi Prime Minister, according to Iran International.
Ghaani is reportedly in the country to discuss US pressure on the Iraqi government to disarm all militias in the country and hand the monopoly of force to the Iraqi state, especially following months of attacks by these militias against US forces in the region and against Israel with drones and projectiles.
The head of the Mukhtar Army, Wathiq al-Battat, recently gave an interview claiming that Iraqis could simply drown Israel in spit and urine if it wanted to, but that Iran does not want the militias to be involved in fighting Israel. The state of Iraq has also repeatedly stated it does not want to get involved in the fight between Israel and Iran.
Ghaani is reportedly also set to discuss recent developments in Syria with the militias, where Iran has suffered a serious blow in terms of influence and its presence in the country following the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad.
