The Israel Defense Forces announced the launch of the Hashmonaim Brigade, the first combat unit specifically tailored for ultra-Orthodox Jews, signaling a new era in military service integration.
Initially, 50 Haredi soldiers have been recruited into active duty, laying the foundation for the brigade's inaugural company. Moreover, 100 ultra-Orthodox reservists are set to join today, embarking on a six-month Infantry Rifleman 07 training program, which will lead to the formation of the brigade's first reserve unit.
In preparation for this historic integration, the IDF has:
- Selected and trained command staff sensitive to Haredi cultural nuances
- Modified standard military policies to accommodate religious observances
- Altered training facilities to meet the specific lifestyle needs of ultra-Orthodox soldiers
- Developed specialized training modules that align with religious practices
"These initial units are just the start," an IDF spokesperson remarked. "We plan to intensify recruitment efforts this month, aiming to bolster our forces while honoring the religious commitments of our soldiers."
The establishment of the Hashmonaim Brigade not only addresses the IDF's immediate operational needs during conflict but also reflects a broader shift towards inclusivity within Israel's defense framework. Concurrently, new non-combat roles are being made available for Haredi recruits, broadening their participation across various military functions.
