Hezbollah is planning to hold the funeral of its long-time leader, Hassan Nasrallah, after the conclusion of the current 60-day ceasefire with Israel, a senior group official confirmed on Sunday.
Wafiq Safa, speaking during a visit to the site in Beirut's Dahiyeh suburb where Nasrallah was killed, stated that preparations for the funeral are underway. He also warned that Hezbollah remains prepared to counter any "aggression" from Israel.
Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah's underground headquarters on September 27, ending his 32-year leadership of one of the world's most formidable terrorist organizations. Days later, his successor, Hashem Safieddine, was also killed in an Israeli airstrike in early October. Plans for Safieddine’s funeral are reportedly being finalized as well.
These developments follow months of escalating hostilities that prompted Israel to launch Operation Northern Arrows in September 2024. The operation aimed to counter relentless rocket, mortar, and UAV attacks by Hezbollah that had resulted in dozens of Israeli casualties and the displacement of tens of thousands.
The ongoing 60-day ceasefire, agreed upon in late November, marked a significant shift in Hezbollah’s stance. Previously, the group had insisted it would cease hostilities only if Israel ended its military campaign in Gaza. The current truce, however, is independent of the Gaza conflict and offers a temporary pause in the northern front’s deadly clashes.
