Saudi Arabia announced today it would establish an air bridge for humanitarian assistance to Syria, days after the kingdom's first high-level diplomatic meeting with Syria's new leadership under al-Julani.
The Saudi foreign minister's visit to Damascus marked the first official Saudi diplomatic presence in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government. During what officials described as a cordial meeting, Saudi Arabia committed to helping stabilize the new Syrian administration.
The aid program, announced jointly by Saudi Arabia's foreign and defense ministries, will facilitate daily flights carrying food, medical supplies, fuel and other essential materials to Syrian hospitals and civilian infrastructure.
"It is our duty to help Syria stand on its feet again, after more than a decade of devastating civil war," Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Saud said in a statement.
The Saudi initiative represents a significant shift in regional dynamics, as the kingdom moves to establish ties with Syria's new leadership. The humanitarian air bridge is expected to begin operations in the coming days, according to Saudi state media.
