According to an IDF spokesperson, the Yasur helicopter sustained damage during the incident and will undergo necessary repairs before returning to service. "Damage was caused to the helicopter, but no casualties occurred. The helicopter will be repaired and return to operational status," the statement read.
The Yasur, which has been a crucial part of the IDF’s fleet for over 50 years, was upgraded in the 1980s with Israeli innovations to enhance its systems. These modifications remain in place today.
The Yasur helicopters have a history of involvement in tragic accidents, including the infamous 1997 disaster in which 73 soldiers lost their lives. In November 2019, a similar incident nearly occurred when a malfunction in one of the helicopters’ engines led to an emergency landing after carrying 14 personnel and crew. Fortunately, the helicopter caught fire after the landing, but no fatalities were reported.
About a year and a half ago, the Yasur fleet was grounded temporarily due to a malfunction detected during routine training. While the helicopter landed safely without casualties, this incident also highlighted the ongoing need for thorough maintenance and vigilance.
The IDF is currently investigating the recent incident and will continue to ensure that the helicopter returns to service once fully repaired and inspected.
