The government announced today (Sunday) that it was extending funding for evacuees, largely from the north. staying in hotels and in self-arranged housing until the end of February next year.
According to government figures, some 68,135 have not returned to their homes and are staying in alternative accommodations - some 13,580 of them in hotels or other arrangements directly funded by the state, while 54,555 of them are living in self-arranged housing, with a housing stipend provided by the government.
Ever since the evacuation of residents considered too dangerously near the southern and especially the northern border began, the Tourism Ministry led by Haim Katz managed to help fund accommodations for the evacuees to the tune of almost 10 billion NIS.
The government did not say why they have decided to extend the funding of accommodations for evacuees, especially in the north where a ceasefire remains in force, but this is likely due to a defense assessment that it is not yet safe for them to return to their homes.
