A New York Times investigation has revealed critical new details about the moments that almost compromised Israel's covert "beeper operation" against Hezbollah. According to the report, when a Hezbollah technician began suspecting the communication devices contained hidden explosives, Israeli forces moved quickly to eliminate him in an airstrike.

The operation reached a critical point on September 11, when Israeli intelligence detected that technical experts might examine the devices. On September 16, Netanyahu convened security officials for an urgent meeting. Some opposed proceeding, warning it could trigger full-scale retaliation from both Hezbollah and Iran. Despite these objections, Netanyahu gave the green light. The next day, thousands of beepers detonated.

The report also sheds new light on Nasrallah's final weeks. Even after moving to a bunker 12 meters underground in late September, the Hezbollah leader reportedly dismissed warnings from his inner circle to take additional security measures. The Times reports he remained unaware that Israeli intelligence had been monitoring his movements for years.

The operation's first phase began in fall 2023, when the devices were reportedly distributed through a Mossad front company.

Hamas issued a public statement today (Sunday) regarding Haniyeh's assassination, contradicting Israeli media reports about how the operation was carried out. The organization claims Haniyeh was killed by a guided missile fired into his room, not by a pre-planted explosive device.

The statement comes in response to yesterday's Channel 12 news report, which detailed what it described as a meticulously planned operation involving explosives placed in Haniyeh's room.

Hamas dismissed these accounts as "Zionist occupation lies." According to their statement, their investigation concluded that Haniyeh was killed by a guided missile, and suggested that contrary reports are attempts to "deflect attention from the crime that violated the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran by striking one of its official headquarters."
