Fully fifty percent of Iran's industrial parks have shut down due to power outages according to the employees' representative on Iran's Supreme Labor Council, according to Iran International.
Iran International says that "Aging infrastructure, international sanctions, and poor management have compounded the problem, leading to the shutdown of approximately 80 power plants," leading to power outages in industry, homes, and even television shows.
Sanctions and lack of investment in aging infrastructure over many years has left Iran with a serious shortfall in necessary fuel for power plants across the country, despite very large oil and gas reserves within its territory.
This news joins with reports of 50% unemployment among workers aged 24-50 and a crashing Iranian currency, as Iran braces for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who has promised to restore "maximum pressure" sanctions of the sort the current Biden administration relaxed.
