A magnificent legacy

Fallen soldier Zamir Burke's light burns brighter than ever

This isn't just about remembering Zamir. It's about continuing the light he brought into the world.

Zamir Burke (20) was an IDF commander, who was murdered by Hamas terrorists just 29 days ago in Gaza, while defending his people and his homeland.

He was an exceptional young man, gifted at Maths and physics. He wanted to pursue an academic career in pure physics after he finished up his army service.

He was also a beloved son and brother, an incredible friend and a wonderful madrich (mentor) to his special needs chanichim (students). When others were resting after long school days, he was volunteering with these kids, taking care of them and taking them on outings as part of Et La'Asot.

But the true scope of his impact only became clear after he fell in battle. His teachers, students, and community members have been coming forward with stories that paint a portrait of a young man who touched countless lives while quietly pursuing an ambitious dream.

His final text message, which was only received after he fell, said, "'Keep bringing light and goodness to the world". That was Zamir in essence, though no one fully grasped how deeply he lived that mission.

Even while serving in the IDF, Zamir's first priority remained his students. His mother, Tammy, recalls, "As soon as he came home, he would always say, "'I need to see my students first". Then family, then friends – but students came first."

His passion project was establishing a special education center in Bet Shemesh. "He was absolutely determined to build this house of learning," says his mother. "He'd ask me repeatedly, 'Why don't we have a building yet? These children need this.'"

Now, his dream is finally taking shape. In the heart of Bet Shemesh, a structure stands ready to be transformed into the educational center Zamir envisioned. With therapy rooms, lecture halls, and spaces for parent-teacher conferences, the building's infrastructure awaits completion – a lasting testament to a fallen hero's dedication to serving others.

A fundraising campaign has been launched to complete Zamir's vision, with community members rallying to ensure his dream of creating a nurturing space for special needs education becomes reality.
