Opposition members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee published an open letter today (Wednesday), calling on IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi to testify regarding the army's manpower needs in the wake of the war and its ability to absorb Haredim into its ranks.
The letter starts with criticism of the defense establishment for preparing draft notices targeted at Haredim who are working or not learning in yeshivah, while the current law requires that everyone be drafted, including yeshivah students.
It then goes on to quote numbers from the Defense Ministry pointing to 13,500 wounded and 800 dead since October 7, which demonstrates the army's urgent manpower needs.
The letter ends by saying that they seek to summon IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi to give a "comprehensive survey" regarding the army's manpower needs, the consequences of manpower shortages for the army's readiness, and the efforts and readiness of the army to absorb Haredim into its ranks.
The letter is signed by MK Gadi Eizenkot, MK Elazar Stern, MK Idan Roll, MK Ron Katz, MK Ram Ben Barak, MK Merav Michaeli, MK Karin Elharar, MK Yoav Segelovitch, MK Meir Cohen, MK Sharon Nir, and MK Moshe Tur-Paz.
