Channel 12 News has reported that Israeli Air Force (IAF) Chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar acknowledged shortcomings in the IAF’s response to the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, describing the Air Force as “not effective enough” that morning.
“Why did we fail? The morning of October 7 began for us with a complete surprise,” Bar reportedly stated during an internal presentation on the IAF’s probe into the events. “We pounced, fought, assisted, rescued, gave everything. But unfortunately, we were not effective enough that day.”
The findings of the probe, as cited by Channel 12, highlighted that the IAF’s preparedness and response were inadequate. The investigation revealed that the terror attack began at 6:30 a.m., and by 7:08 a.m., Bar had ordered all off-duty personnel to return to their posts. By 9:30 a.m., the IAF declared the entire border area a “killing zone,” despite the potential risks to hostages.
In response to the report, the IDF stated: “The Israeli Air Force’s investigation is being examined as part of the overall investigation into October 7 and will be presented to the public when it is concluded.” The statement also noted that the probe’s main findings have been shared with the IAF’s senior command and are informing the General Staff’s ongoing investigation, which remains incomplete.
