A council comprised of Iran's "heads of the three branches of government, ministers, and other council members" has decided to end restrictions on WhatsApp and Google Play, according to IRNA state media.
According to the report, Sattar Hashemi, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, stated on X that: "Today, we took the first step towards lifting internet restrictions with unity and collaboration. I extend my gratitude to the President, media, and activists for their efforts. We need this solidarity more than ever. This path continues."
Removing restrictions on internet access, including to platforms such as WhatsApp, was one of the promises of reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian.
It remains to be seen how long this liberalization will last given increasing economic struggles in Iran, with high inflation, fuel shortages, and a depreciating currency.
