Reserve soldier Haim Meizlish not only flew from New York to Israel on October 7, 2023, to fight against Hamas; he also helped the IDF acquire the drone that located Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
The soldier is Chaim Zvi Meizlish, the great-grandson of the Rebbe, the author of the Berach Moshe of Satmar zt"l, who chose to immigrate to Israel and enlist in the IDF about eight years ago. He was a platoon commander in the IDF's platoon commanders' course, but despite everything, he did not cut off contact with his family and with his father, Rabbi Mordechai Aharon Meizlish, Rabbi of the Satmar Students' Union Beit Hamad, son of Rabbi Dov Berish Meizlish, son-in-law of the Rebbe Berach Moshe of Satmar zt"l.
Sinwar, 61, was killed in October after the drone spotted a group of armed men moving between buildings. The drone helped locate the terrorists, and a battle ensued that led to the terrorists splitting before they were eliminated. Sinwar ran alone into a house and was eventually killed.
Sinwar's last moments were recorded by a drone, which recorded him sitting with his head covered and throwing a stick at the drone.
The first drone, donated by a group in New Jersey, was the DJI Mavic equipped with a thermal camera and used primarily for general observation. The second drone, DJI Avata, was donated by London-based fashion designer Hannah Lankri Sufrin and is designed to navigate small spaces, such as entering buildings through windows, according to Meizlish. Lankri told The Daily Wire that she has raised nearly half a million dollars since the war began to help obtain supplies for the IDF.
Meizlish was not present during the operation because he decided to take a few hours off to see his wife and newborn daughter. "Because my wife came to Israel, I went to visit her," Meizlish explained. "When I came back, I realized that they had eliminated Sinwar and they had done a lot of good things. I was a little sad that I wasn't part of it, but we invested a huge amount of activity afterwards to find the kidnappers."
