An Arab Israeli saved dozens of Haredi girls after a fire that broke out this morning (Monday) in the building of a boarding school on David Yellin Street in Jerusalem.
Dozens of girls were trapped in the burning building. Imad Hirbawi, a 35-year-old Arab-Israeli from the Mount of Olives who works on renovations on the upper floors of the building, entered the building when he realized that a fire had broken out. He lowered dozens of girls from the burning building to its outdoor area, Israel Hayom reported
An initial investigation indicates that a failure in an electrical device ignited a fire and caused a fire.
Magen David Adom (MDA) reported that 51 victims of the fire were treated and evacuated, including a 30-year-old man in serious condition, along with an 18-year-old girl and a 20-year-old girl, both from the boarding school. In addition, two men, aged 32 and 18, were moderately injured, 34 were lightly injured.
The police forces that arrived at the scene began operations to rescue the residents of the area and those trapped in the burning building, risking their lives in the process. During the rescue, a police volunteer who lives nearby acted very resourcefully, using the tools at his disposal – a disc saw. The volunteer, together with the policemen, worked to cut bars and open escape routes for those trapped.
