The Cost of War

Yair Lapid: "A 5-year-old girl died because of me"

It's unclear what exactly Lapid was trying to say: That war has a price? Pretty sure any soldier knows that. That he feels guilty? Ok, and then what?

Yesh Atid party chairman, Member of Knesset Yair Lapid, recently released his new book 'War and Dream' in which he recounts, among other things, his time serving as Prime Minister in the Bennett-Lapid government.

Lapid described meeting with his staff at the end of the first day of Operation Breaking Dawn, during which almost the entire military leadership of Islamic Jihad was eliminated. Lapid noticed his staff members were happy about Israel's achievements in the operation, so he gathered them to say a few words before they went home.

According to the quote published on Haaretz's website, Lapid wrote that he told them: "I see that you're happy that we proved we can conduct war better than all those who looked down on us. But I don't want that to be what you take home with you."

According to Haaretz, at this point Lapid told them: "I killed a five-year-old girl today. She died because of decisions I made and I will have to live with that until my last day. That's what you should take home with you. Not the victory, but the price."
