Latet, an Israeli nonprofit aid organization, unveiled its annual poverty report on Monday, highlighting the harsh economic realities of 2024 against the backdrop of ongoing war and conflict. The report, based on Latet’s multidimensional poverty index - which measures deprivation in essential living needs - paints a grim picture.
According to the findings, 678,200 families (22.3%) and 2,756,000 individuals (28.7%) in Israel are currently living in poverty. Among them are 1,240,000 children, making up a staggering 39.6% of the impoverished population.
Most aid recipients in Israel report that in the past year there has been a sharp decline in their ability to purchase basic products in Israel, and at the same time, they have reported increasing difficulty in paying bills.
Those most affected are the younger generation. Almost half of the children in supported families suffer from severe effects on their studies and mental state.
In the past year, the elderly in Israel have also found themselves in increasing distress. More than half of the elderly who are supported live in extreme poverty. According to the report, they are struggling to pay bills despite the discounts to which they are entitled. and purchase basic food products.
The health sector is another victim of growing poverty. According to the report, about 70% of the recipients are forced to forgo treatments and medications due to financial hardship, and at the same time, this distress takes a very heavy toll on the mental health of the recipients.
