The operation is targeting a local armed group in Jenin composed of terrorists linked to both Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Hamas. The operation was launched due to concerns that these terrorists might try to overthrow the PA, inspired by the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.
Ahead of the operation, US security coordinator Gen. Mike Fenzel met with PA security chiefs to review the strategy. Fenzel was provided with a list of urgently needed military supplies, including ammunition, helmets, bulletproof vests, radios, night vision equipment, explosive disposal suits, and armored vehicles.
Israel must approve all military aid provided to the PA. Although Israel initially approved this aid last year, approval was later frozen following the October 7th massacre, according to Israel National news reports.
Clashes between PA forces and local terror cells have been intensifying in recent weeks, particularly in the cities of Jenin and Tulkarm. According to Galei Tzahal, the Israeli defense establishment is increasingly concerned that the collapse of the Assad regime could lead to the downfall of the Palestinian Authority, and it is closely monitoring the PA's stability.
