Paraguayan President Santiago Peña visited the Western Wall today (Thursday) where he expressed his commitment to the Jewish people on the day his country moves its embassy to Jerusalem.
Peña said: "It is a privilege for me to stand here, to express my gratitude and to recommit myself to work for the benefit of Paraguay, Israel and the Jewish people. I am here today to thank God that three years ago I came here to pray that I would win the position of president and serve my country."
Meanwhile, yesterday Pania spoke at the Knesset plenum on the occasion of the transfer of the embassy to Jerusalem, declaring that "Paraguay is one of the countries that always stands by Israel after the terrible attacks of October 7. This was not just an attack on Israel, but on all of us."
He also explained the reason for moving the Paraguayan embassy to Jerusalem: "There are moments when you have to take a stand. The decision to open the embassy in this city is based on the values of solidarity and true brotherhood. Without an embassy in Jerusalem, the diplomatic relations between us will not be with a real heart and soul. With this transition, our friendship will have a beating heart and I hope we will inspire other countries to do the same."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu turned to the Paraguayan president and said: "We all admire the energy and talent that you brought with you to the presidency in Asunción. You are making unremitting efforts to promote your country. Your courageous promise to move the Paraguayan embassy to Jerusalem is taking shape, and you deserve every blessing."
