In a shocking development, almost half of the Yale student body voted overwhelmingly yesterday (Sunday) for the university to divest from any company serving the Israeli army, according to the Jewish Chronicle.
The students were presented with three questions: should they divest from arms manufacturers, military contractors, and should they support investment in Palestinian academic initiatives. 83.1% supported divesting from arms manufacturers, 76.6% supported divesting from other military contractors, and 79.5% supported investing in Palestinian academic initiatives.
The Yale Friends of Israel said "While we are disappointed by the results, we are confident that Yale University will not divest from democracy — that it will continue to invest in companies that assist in the protection of the United States and its allies, including Israel, from the tyrannical and anti-democratic forces that wish to destroy them and democracy itself."
The decision is not binding on the university itself, and similar demands from anti-Israel protestors for universities to divest from Israel have so far all ended in failure.
