Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to attend President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, sources close to the Prime Minister's office revealed Sunday. While a final decision is pending, the historic visit would come at a pivotal moment in Middle Eastern politics.
The potential visit coincides with significant regional developments, including recent Israeli military successes in Gaza and the weakening of Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Most notably, it follows the unexpected collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, which Netanyahu described as "a historic day for the Middle East."
The timing is particularly significant as Iran has recently shown signs of diplomatic flexibility. According to recent reports, Iranian officials have adopted a more conciliatory approach following Trump's November election victory, including halting planned retaliatory actions against Israel.
The visit, if confirmed, would need to be coordinated around Netanyahu's ongoing criminal trial, where he is scheduled to give testimony tomorrow (Tuesday).
Many in Israel hope that Hamas will return the hostages before January 20th, following Trump's strong threat to them, and that he will be in a unique position to end the war with Gaza, too.
It's good to have him back in Israel's corner, especially after the past animosity with Netanyahu. And as we know, there's never a dull moment when Trump is in power.
