The IDF Spokesperson reported this morning (Sunday) that in light of the events in Syria and in accordance with the assessment of the situation and the possibility of armed men entering the buffer zone, the IDF has deployed forces in the buffer zone and at a number of points necessary for defense: "In order to ensure the security of the Golan Heights communities and the citizens of Israel," the IDF said in a statement.

Channel 14's military correspondent Hillel Biton Rosen said this morning that as part of the defense of the borders, the commando brigades and paratroopers were sent to the border area with Syria.

Israeli Air Force fighter jets carried out waves of attacks around Damascus in recent hours, with the aim of destroying advanced weapons systems and weapons production facilities that could fall into the hands of the rebels. In addition, a chemical weapons depot in Syria was attacked.

It was also emphasized that the IDF is not intervening in events taking place in Syria. "The IDF will continue to operate for as long as necessary in order to preserve the buffer zone and protect the State of Israel and its citizens," the IDF Spokesperson said.

Earlier this morning, Syrian media reported that tanks of our forces had crossed into Syrian territory, in the Quneitra area, to fight against the Islamist rebels opposing the Assad regime. According to reports, the tanks crossed into al-Hamidiya in Quneitra, in the Golan Heights area.
