One of the greatest rabbis in the Sephardic community, a member of the Shas Council of Torah Sages, wants to initiate a meeting of the Council of Sages in order to elect a joint presidency of the Council, Kikar HaShabbat has learned.
In the shadow of the ongoing tension among the movement's leadership and activists on the ground, and about six months since the Gaon Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef ended his official term as Chief Rabbi of Israel, there are those in the party's spiritual leadership who are trying to end the event that is shaking the movement.
Kikar HaShabbat learned that a member of the Council of Torah Sages spoke earlier this week, during a family celebration, with a senior Shas official and raised the possibility of convening the council to elect a presidency.
During the conversation, the council member said, "This is a decision made by the rabbis, not the politicians," referring to the desire to promote the establishment of a joint presidency in the Council of Torah Sages.
Five months have passed since the Gaon Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef completed his official term as Chief Rabbi of Israel and President of the Great Court, but so far he has not joined the Shas Council of Torah Sages, contrary to party predictions that the move would take place within days or at the latest during the High Holidays.
