The naming ceremony of the IDF's sixth submarine took place today (Tuesday) at the port city of Kiel in Germany, in the presence of Israel's Naval Commander, Major General David Salama and other senior representatives of the Navy and Defense Ministry.
The ceremony also marked the beginning of the building of the IDF's future submarine fleet, composed of the Dakar model, set to be delivered at the beginning of the next decade.
The submarine's name is INS (Israel Navy Ship) Drakon. The name uses the letters D, K, R in its name to commemorate the fallen of the submarine Dakar, which was sunk shortly after the Six Day War.
The submarine will be delivered to the IDF during 2025, when it will then sail to a home port and serve as an operational submarine in the Israeli Navy.
The INS Drakon is of the AIP Dolphin class, and it possesses unique capabilities, including advanced technologies, meant to add to the IDF's capabilities in various theaters.
