The Shiite party in the Iraqi parliament has submitted a series of bills demanding the abolition of women's rights in the country and lowering the age of consent from 18 to 9.
The parliament in Iraq is set to vote on a series of proposals that are expected to radically change the country's laws and severely impact women's rights in the country. Since the American invasion of Iraq, the country has maintained a series of amendments made under the temporary government during the American rule, which also included the liberalization of rights, with an emphasis on women's rights.
For the first time, the Iraqi parliament is considering a massive overhaul of women's rights in the country. According to the Shiite party's proposed laws in Iraq, the age of consent for sexual relations for women has been lowered from 18 to just 9 years old, and additionally, the law will permit marriages between adult men and young girls.
Moreover, the laws currently being considered will deny women the right to divorce, inherit property, or have custody of children.
The coalition controlling the Iraqi parliament announced that the laws "align with the Islamic law perspective in the country and will protect women, girls, and daughters from 'immoral relations' with men."
