Devastating tragedy in Iran

Iran executes Arvin Ghahremani in controversial self-defense case

In 2022, Iranian Arvin Ghahremani was allegedly defending himself against a knife attack when he killed Amir Shokri. Today, he was executed in Iran, after efforts to commute his sentence failed.

Arvin Nathaniel Ghahremani (20) was hanged in prison in the western city of Kermanshah after being convicted of murdering Amir Shokri during a street fight in 2022, says the Norway-based Iran Human Rights group, as reported by Times of Israel.

Under Iranian law, once a person is found guilty of intentional murder, the death sentence can be commuted, but only if the family of the deceased says it forgives the perpetrator.

The victim’s family refused a large financial settlement offered by Ghahremani’s family and the Jewish community, as reported by Ynet, tragically ending in Khamenei's execution.

Earlier this year, a close aide to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the intelligence division of the IRGC pressured the family of the victim not to accept the settlement.

Ghahremani was previously supposed to have been executed in May but was granted a last-minute stay of the sentence at the time.

The human rights organization IHRNGO argued that mistakes were made in the investigation and the investigators deliberately ignored Ghahremani attempts to save the victim - which were not mentioned in the indictment. They also argued that the defense attorney, appointed by the court, did not adequately protect his client because he did not address the fact that Ghahremani acted in self-defense.

The Times of Israel contributed to this report.
