The Knesset passed the decision to ban UNRWA activities in the state of Israel following multiple claims as to their ties to Hamas and the involvement of their workers in the October 7th massacre.
The Pentagon was very unhappy about this decision.
Press Secretary Pat Ryder stated that millions of Palestinians depend on that aid, and enacting this legislation would create major threats for those who rely on it. "Thus, we will keep pushing the Israeli Government to halt the enactment of the law."
Ryder refused to disclose whether Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin talked about the Knesset's UNRWA legislation with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant during their Monday phone conversation. The US does not support the implementation.
He pointed out that the letter from Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, sent to the Israeli government almost two weeks ago, clearly expressed US opposition to the legislation and warned of potential consequences under US law and policy if it is implemented.
Ryder chose not to respond to a query regarding UNRWA participation in terrorist actions.
