Israel passes law banning separate Jerusalem consulates for Palestinians

The law, promoted by New Right MK Zeev Elkin, states that only embassies credentialed by the State of Israel may be established in Jerusalem, and is explicitly aimed at maintaining all of Jerusalem as part of Israel.

By a majority of 29-7, the Knesset passed an amendment today (Tuesday) to Basic Law: Jerusalem, which bars countries from establishing diplomatic delegations in Jerusalem which are not embassies credentialed by the State of Israel.

The law is directly aimed at preventing the establishment of separate diplomatic embassies in Jerusalem for the Palestinians, according to its co-author and promoter, New Right MK Zeev Elkin. The law also says that Israel will encourage the establishment of embassies credentialed by Israel in Jerusalem.

In an X post congratulating the passage of the law on the second and third vote, Elkin said that "in the previous (Knesset) term, we were forced to threaten to resign from the government, to stop an American attempt to establish a consulate for the Palestinians in East Jerusalem and undermine the status of united Jerusalem as the capital of Israel."

He then celebrated by saying "from now on, there's no more need to pressure the State of Israel, it's simply forbidden by law!"
