Public Prayer, Tel Aviv

Another city bans public prayers in step with Tel Aviv

Following Tel Aviv’s lead it is restricting prayers in public spaces, citing concerns over gender segregation and inequality. The municipality stated that prayers will only be permitted in synagogues and designated locations to maintain community standards.

Two months after the Tel Aviv municipality announced that it would not allow prayers during the High Holy Days in the public space, the Ramat Hasharon municipality joined it in announcing on its Facebook page that "prayers will be held only in synagogues."

The announcement stated, "There will be no gender segregation in the public space in Ramat Hasharon. The Ramat Hasharon Municipality announces that unequal prayer and gender segregation will not be allowed in public spaces, holidays and in general. Prayers will be held only in synagogues and designated places."

The municipality added that it will assist the synagogues and regulated places of worship as much as possible in order to allow prayer for each and every resident in his own way, "We call on the public to respect the decision and not to hold separate prayers in the public space, the municipality concluded.

The Hotem organization said: "The Ramash Municipality joins a minority group that persecutes every Jewish trait in the public sphere. A municipality that seeks to restrict the desire of thousands of observants of tradition to take part in the prayers of the High Holy Days and push them into synagogues is committing a despicable act. The people of Israel love tradition and will continue to adhere to it despite the background noise of the group of extreme progressives."
