Report: Gideon Saar to join government as minister without portfolio

Saar brings with him four MKs and would cancel out Itamar Ben Gvir's effective veto on coalition decisions. The Prime Minister and the New Right leader are expected to give a joint statement shortly.

Gideon Saar, leader of the New Right party and former Justice Minister, is set to join the government as a minister without portfolio, according to a report today (Sunday) by Channel 12 reporter Amit Segal.

According to Segal, Saar's four MK will expand the coalition and remove Itamar Ben Gvir's ability to threaten to force early elections by refusing to vote in their support.

According to Army Radio, Saar will also be part of the narrow consultation cabinet where the most important wartime decisions are made.

While there were previous discussions of Saar replacing Yoav Gallant as Defense Minister, these talks were nixed following the escalation in the north, although Segal believes this option remains a possibility.

Saar himself defended his experience and knowledge and ability to serve as Defense Minister, noting the success of such ministers with a largely civilian background such as Moshe Arens and Shimon Peres. However, he said that due to the current situation, a replacement of ministers would not be wise.
