Iron Dome interception, Israeli Navy ship struck

Initial Investigation: The Interceptor Switched Targets and Hit the Ship

According to the preliminary investigation of the interceptor's hit on the "Dabur" ship, it appears that an interceptor launched towards a Hezbollah UAV switched targets en route, hit the ship, and killed soldier David Moshe Ben Shitrit.

Two other soldiers were injured in the incident. The initial findings suggest that a Iron Dome interceptor was fired at a UAV launched by Hezbollah into the maritime area off the northern coast, but the interceptor mistakenly switched its target while in flight and struck the Dabur and the soldiers on board instead of the UAV. The IDF states that this is a rare malfunction that they have not encountered before. Another possibility being examined is that the UAV was successfully intercepted at a low altitude above the Dabur and the interceptor debris struck the deck and the soldiers. Additionally, some parts of the interceptor, which apparently did not explode, were found on the ship. If it had exploded, the entire Dabur would likely have caught fire.

It is known that the hit occurred on the Dabur's rear deck. Three soldiers who were on the deck at the time were injured: David Moshe Ben Shitrit was critically injured and transferred to another vessel, then to the port in Nahariya, and subsequently to the hospital in Nahariya where he was pronounced dead. The two other injured soldiers were taken to the Nahariya hospital; one in moderate condition who was admitted to an orthopedic department and is expected to undergo surgery, and the other in light condition who was released home.

The Dabur, which sustained damage from the explosion, has returned to the Haifa base for repairs and is expected to be fully operational and return to operational activity within 24-48 hours.
