An uproar erupted at Ben Gurion University after an Arab student shared a video on his WhatsApp status in which Hamas leader Ismail Haniya was seen quoting a verse from the Koran about the martyrs.
The video, which has received many views among students at the university, provoked sharp criticism of the university's administration, which avoided taking steps against the student involved.
The student who distributed the video, who studies in the data engineering department, claimed in response that he shared the video by mistake and apologized for the act. Despite this, many students expressed outrage and claimed that it was a video of a terrorist nature and that it incited violence.
"The video quotes the verse from the Koran that was said just before committing suicide and promises paradise for the martyrs," said one of the students at the university. "This is a video that incites terrorism, and the university did nothing about it."
Many students expressed their frustration with the inadequate response of the university administration. "Why should a student who does a 300-day reserve in Gaza have to return to class and sit next to a student who incites terrorism?" they ask "It is simply a joke that the university does not act in such cases."
