After the upheaval in Hamas with the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh and the disagreements regarding the identity of his successor, the terrorist organization will soon announce the appointment of Muhammad Ismail as the head of Hamas' political bureau.

This is a compromise candidate between Yahya Sinwar's camp and Khaled Meshaal's camp. Initially, Hamas wanted to appoint Khaled Meshaal to the position, who had already held the position before Haniyeh, but the opposition of the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, took his name off the table. Sinwar even tried to push for the appointment of his deputy Khalil al-Hiya, due to his preference for a successor who has good relations with Iran and Syria.

Originally, it was decided to appoint a tripartite leadership. According to the report in Saudi media, Hamas considered establishing a joint leadership for Khaled Mashal, Yahya Sinwar and Zahar Jabarin. However, it seems that even this met with disagreements, and now there is a majority for the appointment of Muhammad Ismail to replace Haniyeh.
