The British newspaper *The Guardian* reported today (Monday) that Tehran has sought to convene an emergency meeting with representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Arab foreign ministers, aiming to pressure them into supporting Iran’s right to respond to Israeli actions. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, which could delay the Iranian attack in response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh until after the discussion.
Earlier today, US media reported a dramatic message from Israel to Iran, conveyed through a European country, which might explain why Iran is postponing its attack. Israel reportedly warned Tehran that any attack on Israeli civilians would result in immediate and total destruction of all Iranian nuclear facilities.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said this morning: “The assassination of Haniyeh violates international laws. We do not seek to escalate tensions, but it is necessary to punish Israel to prevent further instability.” He added, “Tehran has the right to deter Israel and stop its crimes. We have taken legal and political measures and expect the Security Council to take a stand. We have utilized all diplomatic efforts to prevent the war. Our response will be within the framework of international laws and agreements.”
