Pandora's Box: Which weapons does Iran have (and how scared should we be)?

Iran's extensive arsenal contrasts sharply with Israel's multi-layered defense systems, which recently demonstrated their effectiveness by intercepting a massive wave of Iranian attacks, though experts warn that future threats could challenge even these cutting-edge defenses.

As tensions escalate in the Middle East following recent events in Beirut and Tehran, all eyes are on Iran's military capabilities and Israel's defensive measures. The situation has put the international community on high alert, with concerns about potential retaliation and the (in)stability of the region.

Iran's Military Capabilities

According to former U.S. Central Command chief Kenneth McKenzie, Iran possesses an arsenal of over 3,000 ballistic missiles. These weapons, with ranges up to 2,000 kilometers, are capable of reaching Israel from Iranian territory. The Sejjil and Khorramshahr series represent the longest-range missiles in Iran's inventory, with the latter reportedly able to strike targets up to 3,000 kilometers away.

In addition to ballistic missiles, Iran has developed cruise missiles like the Hoveizeh and Soumar, with ranges between 1,350 and 3,000 kilometers. The country has also invested heavily in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, with the Shahed 136 gaining notoriety for its use in various conflicts.

Israeli Defense Systems

Israel, in response to regional threats, has developed a multi-layered air defense system considered one of the most advanced in the world. This system includes the Arrow 3 and Arrow 2 for long-range ballistic missile interception, David's Sling for medium-range threats, and the Iron Dome for short-range rocket defense.

The Arrow 3, capable of exo-atmospheric interception, represents the pinnacle of Israel's missile defense technology. It recently made headlines with a successful intercept of a ballistic missile outside Earth's atmosphere, demonstrating its capability against long-range threats.

David's Sling, another key component of Israel's defense, has proven effective against various missile types and has attracted international attention, with Finland recently purchasing the system.

Recent Developments

The effectiveness of these defense systems was put to the test on April 14, when Iran and its allies launched a combined attack of 185 UAVs, 110 ballistic missiles, and 36 cruise missiles towards Israel. Israeli officials reported that 99% of these projectiles were successfully intercepted, showcasing the robustness of their defense network.

However, defense experts caution that no system is infallible, and future attacks could potentially overwhelm even the most sophisticated defenses. The Israeli military remains on high alert, continuously upgrading and adapting its systems to meet evolving threats.

International Implications

The ongoing tension between Iran and Israel has far-reaching implications for regional stability and global security. As diplomatic efforts continue to de-escalate the situation, the international community watches closely, hoping to prevent further escalation in this volatile region.
